Malabar Parakeet (Psittacula columboides) is a beautiful social bird found in small groups. They are noisy in the wild and are often heard before they are seen. Homes are generally created atop tall trees in humid deciduous and evergreen forests. Sometimes they are seen in other areas including plantations and lowland forests.
The Malabar Parakeet has beautifully colored plumage. The male’s overall color is a bluish-gray and sometimes reddish-pink tint. The double ring around the neck of the male makes it so striking. The top ring is more of a greenish dark gray color while the lower ring is a brilliant light blue. The green feathers in front of their eyes extend towards their beaks. The female of the species lack the brilliant blue band around their necks. Males normally have a greener casting to the feathers on their foreheads. Female's heads are gray.
The bird is found in Wayanad District of Kerala.
