Madhuca




Botanical name of the plant Madhuca is Madhuca Indica. Madhuca is indigenous to India and is also known as butter tree, which grows up to a height of 20 m. It is usually found in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas. Leaves of the tree contain alkaloid glucosidic saponin and the seeds contain fatty oil. Leaves of Madhuca are effective in the treatment of eczema.

The tannin content in Madhuca is useful in arresting secretions or bleeding. The flowers of the tree are used for the removal of phlegm and catarrhal matter from the bronchial tubes. The bark of the tree is an astringent and tonic used internally in rheumatic diseases and diabetes mellitus. Madhuca oil extracted from the seeds has laxative properties. It cures piles by relieving chronic constipation.
