Lords and Ladies is a perennial herb, which belongs to the family Araceae. It is characterized by a tuberous rhizome and basal - long stalked sagittate leaves. The herb grows in damp woods, shady copses and hedgerows. It is sensitive to soil textures, particularly lime rich soils.
Lords and Ladies contains saponins, starch and calcium oxalate, and can be baked and eaten. It has diuretic and purgative properties. In the past, it was used in powder mixtures with other herbs to aid digestion. But it is now reported as toxic and is not used as an internal herbal medicine.
