Long-billed Pipit

Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis) is a large pipit. The adults’ upper parts are deep brown, feathers narrowly edged tawny or ochraceous, suggesting a steaked effect, mainly on crown.

Its breast is distinctly streaked with dark brown, extending to flanks. The undertail coverts are streaked brown. The wings are dark brown, with buff edges to primaries, secondaries, tertials and coverts. It varies from African Pipit by larger size, larger bill, darker upper parts, and especially color of outer rectrices.

The bird prefers slopes in generally semi-arid, broken veld, often steppe-like with stones and rock outcrops interspersed with grass clumps and low scrub. It usually forages on the ground for insects; takes food from grass stems and tree branches. It is monogamous, solitary and territorial.

The bird can be spotted in Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Haryana.
