Lama Dance is a popular dance performed in the monasteries of
Jammu and Kashmir,
Sikkim and
Himachal Pradesh. It is a festival mask dance performed annually before Losar, the Tibetan New Year.
Lama Dance is an inherent part of the prayer meeting and is not played on its own as a form of entertainment. There are two days of dancing. The dancers perform in detailed robes first day and in full mask and ornate costume the other day. Slow movements, open positions, and large circular winds are the significant features of this dance.
Lama Dance is a depiction of spiritual, human and animal life as well as martial art technique.
