Kushmand Ninth falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Kartik month. Legend says that there was a
brahmin who had two sons named Dhananjaya and Krishna. Both these sons followed a dissipated life. When they died Dhananjaya reached heaven and Krishna reached hell, because Dhananjaya performed baths in the holy
Ganges and gifted a pumpkin filled with gold to a Brahmin, in the month of Kartik, as advised by his spiritual guru. To commemorate it people take bath in the Ganges and gift the brahmins and the poor.
