Kottan is a basket made by the Chettinad community of
Tamil Nadu. They are used for packaging and also as containers for carrying gifts.
The leaves of the ‘palmyra,’ a palm tree, are used in the making of this basket. The fan-shaped leaves are cut into strip, dyed in various shades and then woven into baskets. They feature designs as minute as embroidery. In some cases, beads and crochet are done for adornment.
