Kokum, a tropical evergreen tree, related to the mangosteens, is native to the western coastal regions of South India. The fruits are dark purple to black, sticky and with curled edges. Kokum grows as solitary trees in a tropical forest environment.
It is usually obtainable as a dried rind, resembling a thick plum skin. Kokum gives a pink to purple color and sweet/sour taste when it is added to food. It is especially used with fish curries, chutneys and pickles. Kokum butter is helpful in the treatment of burns, scalds and chaffed skin.
