Kavil Bhagavathi Temple



Kavil Bhagavathi Temple is an ancient shrine located at Changanacherry, near the Munsif Court, in Kottayam District. It was built during the reign of Tekkumcore Kings. The temple is also known by different names such as Kavil Ambalam and Sree Bhagavathi Temple.

The chief deity here is Goddess Bhadrakali. The festival which is peculiar to this temple is Kavil Chirappu. It is held between December and January. An auditorium and a kalyana mandapam (a special building for weddings) are within the premises. The temple participates in the procession of the Chandanakudam celebration, which commences from an old Muslim mosque at Puthoor.

Changanacherry is 18 km south of Kottayam. Changanacherry Railway Station and Changanacherry Bus Station welcome the devotees, who from far-off places for participating Kavil Chirappu.
