Kantakari is a spiny herb growing up to a height of 1.2 m. It is one of the members of dasamula, the ten roots popularly used in
Ayurveda. Kantakari is commonly found throughout India. It is also known as Indian Solanum.
Roots and seeds of Kantakari are used as an expectorant for treating asthma. It is used for relieving cough and chest pain. Stem flowers and fruits are bitter and are prescribed for relief in burning sensation in the feet. The fruits of the plant are also medicinal.
Kantakari is useful in clearing catarrh and phelgm from the bronchial tubes. It is also employed in the treatment of dropsy, a disease marked by an excessive collection of fluid in the tissues and cavities or natural hollows of the body. Other uses of Kantakari include treatment of constipation, flatulence, throat disorders, gum disorders, snake bites, chest pain and certain types of fevers.
