KIRTADS Museum




Kerala Institute for Research, Training and Development of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (KIRTADS) is an ethnological museum, in Chevayur, about seven kilometers from Kozhikode. It is a center for primordial art forms and strives to serve as a laboratory for the study of the material culture of tribes. It also aims to preserve and modernize the primitive art forms of the tribal culture.

On display in the museum are bows and arrows, carrying and storing baskets, domestic utensils, costumes, ornaments and musical instruments. Miniature models and tribal huts with household implements, specimens of herbarium sheets of tribal medicinal plants and a collection of field photographs of tribal are among the unique exhibits.

KIRTADS features a workshop for craft persons, an exhibition hall and a circular-shaped open-air stage with a gallery. A library with books on Anthropology and Sociology is an added attraction.
