Jaina Paintings

Jaina Paintings originated as illustrations in the Jain manuscripts. It contributed greatly to the Indian miniature painting. The paintings are characterized by angular faces, painted noses and peculiar elongated eyes.

The Jain manuscripts consist of square palm leaf panels. The different areas for text and illustration were marked. Once the text was written, the illustrations were made on the panels. The completed manuscript was inserted between richly decorated wooden covers.

The introductory illustrations in a manuscript usually served as invocations and featured the Goddess of learning. Donors to Jain temples were also included in the illustrations.

In mid 14th century changes were introduced in the style of painting. The palette narrowed to 2 main colors, red and gold. Ultramarine was introduced and combined with gold. The diamond shape was introduced and margins were embellished with ornate decorations.
