Indian Winter Green is a branched evergreen, aromatic shrub that grows through out India. It is also known as Gandapura.
Steam distillation of the leaves yields a volatile oil, which is identical to Wintergreen oil, obtained from Gaultheria procumbens. The major ingredient of the oil is methyl salicylate. It is used as stimulant, carminative, and antiseptic. Gandapura ointment is useful in rheumatism, sciatica and neuralgia.
