Indian Wild Dog (Cuon alpinus) is perhaps the most widely distributed of all species and is found in forested areas except mangroves. It is also known as Dhole.
Dhole is much like a domestic dog in appearance, with the long, lank body of the wolf but relatively short leg and muzzle. The tail is quite bushy and ears are more rounded at the tip. Distinctive feature is its red coat, which varies in tone from season to locality.
Dholes are good swimmers and often chase its prey into the water in order to catch it. The dog feeds in daytime and prey include small animals and deer. Occasionally, it tries its hand on larger animals like gaur and buffalo. Mating takes place in November or December.
