Imphal East District




Imphal East District of Manipur is situated at an altitude of 790 m above sea level and covers an area of about 46,944 sq km. It is situated in two separate valleys: Central Valley and Jiribam Valley. The district's headquarters is at Porompat.

The climate is healthful and the monsoon is tropical. The main occupation of the people is agriculture. Horticulture is also acquiring popularity among the people. The main food crops are paddy, potato, sugarcane, maize and vegetables. Spices such as chilli, onion, ginger, turmeric and coriander are also grown.

Shree-Shree Govindajee Temple, Sekta Kei Mound, Sacred Jackfruit tree site at Kaina and Hanuman Temple at Mahabalid are the major tourist attractions. Two war cemeteries, maintained by the British Grave Commission, are also frequently visited by tourists.
