Hyssop is common in the Himalayas at altitudes of 8,000-11,000 ft. It is also grown in gardens as an ornamental plant. Hyssop is an aromatic, shrubby perennial plant with erect or diffuse branches. The foliage are sessile, linear-oblong or lanceolate, obtuse, and entire. The flowers are arranged unilaterally on terminal branches, and are bluish purple. The plant is treated as a medicine for cough. Its oil promotes expectoration in bronchial catarrh and asthma.
