Hoolock

Whitebrowed Gibbon

The Hoolock (Hylobates Hoolock) is the only ape found in India. It lives in hill forests, tropical rain forests, evergreen forests and sheltered valleys. A Hoolock's average height is a little less than 3 ft. It weighs about 6 to 8 kg. The gibbon is black in color, and has a distinctive build of an ape, arms much longer than the legs and with a tailless body. The female's coat turns yellowish-gray on maturity.

The Hoolock walks erect, and swings from branch to branch with its arms. It feeds on fruits, leaves, insects, grub, and spiders. The Hoolock is monogamous animal, and copulation takes place in rainy seasons. The young are generally born during cold weather (December-March.) The Gibbon can be found in the Prince of Wales Zoos, Manipur Zoo, Sepahijala Zoo, and Roing Mini Zoo.
