Acknowledged as the father of modern Hindi literature, Harishchandra, born in 1850, was an exuberant writer of prose and poetry.
Harishchandra Bharatendu has to his credit numerous translated works and writings in other languages such as Sanskrit and Urdu. One can see the portrayal of the sufferings and agonies that a common man encountered during the reign of British in his writings.
Influenced by the great social reformer, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Harishchandra awakened general public through his writings and speeches. This earned him the title of ‘Bharatendu.’
Harishchandra passed away in 1885.
