Gurkhas are a community of the western
Himalayas, originated from Nepal valley. The Gurkhas were renowned for their discipline, loyalty and bravery. Due to this they were recruited for their service in the British and Indian armies in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Gurkha soldiers were not a single ethnic group, tribe, clan, or caste but were composed of the
Magar, Gurung, Limbu, and Rai tribes. Inhabitants of this community nestled as far as River Tista on the east and
Sutlej on the west.
