A native of Bahamas, Gul Mohur is a quick growing medium-sized deciduous tree commonly found in urban areas of India. Its botanical name is Delonix regia and belongs to Caesalpinaceae family. Gold Mohur, Mayflower, Flamboyant, Flame Tree, Peacock Flower, Pentecost Tree and Holy Ghost Tree are the other accepted names.
As an ornamental tree with a flat canopy, it is planted in parks and gardens. It blossoms in April and May and the flowers last for a longer period. The flower color varies from orange-red to scarlet.
The tree has a variety of uses. Poor people use fruits as a source of fuel. Flowers and buds are used for flavoring food and wood is for making toys and ornaments.
