Green Gram




Green gram is an annual herbaceous plant which belongs to the family Leguminoseae and sub family Papilionaceae. It is grown for its edible seeds in the warm regions. It can be cultivated on a variety of soils ranging from well-drained loamy to sandy-loam soil. Green Gram is adaptable to widely varying climatic conditions, can even tolerate extremely dry conditions. The crop is self-fertile and self-pollinated. The gram is cultivated in rice lands after the harvest of the first or second crop of paddy. It is also grown as an intercrop in coconut gardens, or mixed crop with tapioca, colocasia, yam, and banana.
