Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a delightfully elegant water bird with ornate head plumes. It is about 45 to 50 cm in length.
The bird dives into water to feed and also to escape, preferring this to flying. On land, the bird is clumsy as its feet are placed so far back on the body.
Nest is built on the water and is a rather fragile construction. Diet consists of aquatic insects and small fish. The bird is commonly seen in lowland lakes, gravel pits, reservoirs and rivers.
Great Crested Grebe can be seen in the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Rajasthan.
