The fourth day of
Diwali is marked by a special
puja called Govardhan Puja. On this day,
Hindus in many parts of north India worship a mythical mountain called as Govardhan. A replica of the mountain is constructed from cow dung and decorated with flower petals. This mound is worshipped with utmost devotion.
Govardhan Puja celebrates an interesting event in Hindu mythology. Lord Krishna had lifted the Govardhan Mountain with his little finger on this particular day. The mountain was lifted in order to provide shelter to lord’s clansmen from the heavy rains brought about by Lord Indra. Lord Indra was however humbled by this great act and duly apologized to Lord Krishna.
