Goddess Kushmanda




Goddess Kushmanda, also known as Ashtabhuja, is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, others being Durga Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri.

The source of eternal power, Goddess Kushmanda is believed to have created the universe with a mere smile - hence the name. The deity resides in the solar systems and her vehicle is the tiger. She has eight hands, of which one holds a string of rosary beads, which symbolize success and prudence. Others hold a holy urn, a bow, an arrow, a lotus, a pot containing nectar, a disc and a club.

This goddess is worshipped on the fourth day of the Navratri abiding by the rituals as described in the Puranas. She likes 'Kumhde' (pumpkin) as offerings. It is believed that by worshipping Goddess Kushmnada, one can achieve fame and strength.
