Gathas are religious songs of
Parsis, the followers of
Zoroastrianism. These songs, believed to be written by Prophet Zoroaster, serve as prayers and a guiding force in life. The language used in the songs is Iranian.
The Gathas are a part of the Avesta, the holy scripture of the Parsis. These songs are held in high esteem by the followers of the religion. They are believed to be a guiding force towards the Mazda Ahura, the super-wise God. The verses are recited with utter devotion during the festivals. Even a question-answer session held on a Gatha is looked upon with great veneration.
The parsis celebrate six annual feasts dedicated to the Gathas. During these feasts, verses from the Gathas are recited and their meaning is explained. Following the recital, a question-answer session is held.
