Fathang is a kind of land revenue in
Mizoram traditionally payable by the villagers to their chief. When a villager wished to cultivate the land (ram) that was under the jurisdiction of the chief, he paid him a certain number of heaps of paddy in advance. In due course paddy began to be measured in empty 20-litre kerosene cans. Normally fathang was fixed at six tins of unhusked paddy. alternatively, two rupees in cash could also be paid.
