Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed




Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed was the first president of India during the emergency period (1974-77.) His primary education was at Bonda Government High School in Uttar Pradesh. He matriculated from the Delhi Government High School and went to England for higher education in 1923. He joined the Catherine College of Cambridge University and was called to the Bar from Inner Temple, London. He started legal practice in Lahore High Court in 1928. As a Congressman, Ahmed actively participated in the freedom movement. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha during the period 1952-1953. He was elected on Congress ticket to the Assam Assembly during 1957-62 and 1962-67. Also, he has served as the Advocate-General of Assam.

Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed was a tennis player and a golfer. He was the president of the Assam Football Association and the Assam Cricket Association for several terms and also the Vice-President of the Assam Sports Council. In April, 1967 he was elected as the President of the All India Cricket Association. He was survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
