Emblic Myrobalan

Indian Gooseberry



Emblic Myrobalan is a small or medium-sized deciduous tree with smooth, exfoliating bark, commonly seen in the mixed deciduous forests of India. The leaves are feathery with small narrowly oblong, pinnately arranged leaflets. The fruits are fleshy and obscurely 6-lobed. This fruits contain 6 trigonous seeds.

The fruits have acrid, cooling, refrigerant, diuretic, expectorant, cardiotonic, antipyretic, antioxidative, anti-emetic and laxative properties. Dried fruit (with iron) is used as a remedy for anemia, jaundice and dyspepsia. It is useful in the treatment of leukorrhea and atherosclerosis.

Amalaki, Dhatriphala, Amla, and Aovla are its local names.
