Eastern Mole

Eastern Mole (Talpa micrura) is a burrowing mammal having tiny eyes concealed beneath its fur, and long naked snout with nostrils that open upward. It is well adapted for a life of digging, and lacks external ears. The paddle-like forelimbs move laterally, enabling it to move through the soil.

Webbed toes support strong claws and their palms turn outward. The color of the fur varies from gray to brown. The body length is around 4 to 6 inches. The eastern mole has an insatiable appetite, and can eat 70 to 100 percent of its body weight daily. Diets include insect grubs, adult insects and earthworms.

The Mole makes its burrows and nests in the areas protected by trees, stumps, fence rows, buildings or sidewalks.
