Dollarbird

Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) is a medium sized bird, about 27 cm, usually found on edges of open forests and woodlands. Its has a dark brown head, dark green upperparts, dark turquoise underparts, purple- blue throat, blue-black tail and an orange beak. The most remarkable feature of the bird is a conspicuous large round white spot on each under-wing, which resembles a silver dollar.

Dollarbird feeds on large insects such as moths, cicadas and beetles. It catches the insects in the air and then batters them against a branch before consuming.

Dollarbird can be seen in the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Kerala.
