Devaraya I ascended the throne of the
Vijayanagar Empire in 1406. The death of Harihara II was followed by a war of succession among his brothers in which Devaraya emerged successful. After ascending the throne, he attacked the Raichur Doab to win the hand of a beautiful goldsmith girl of Mudgal. But the
Bahmani sultan, Firuz Shah, defeated him with the help of the Reddi Kings. But soon, Devaraya defeated Firuz Shah from whom he extracted the Nalgonda Panagal region. After defeating the Reddi kings he conquered Udayagiri and Motupalli. An Italian traveler, Nicolo Conti, visited his kingdom in 1420. Devaraya I died in 1428 and was succeeded by his brother Vijaya Bukkaraya.
