Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) is an evergreen easy growing houseplant, distributed throughout the tropical areas. It belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae and subfamily Crotonoideae. There are more than 750 species recognized, which are very suitable to greenhouses or sunrooms.
The leathery leaves ranges from vibrant yellows, oranges, shades of reds to purple, and some incredible shades of green. Variegated patterns on the leaves are spots, stripes, streaks and blotches. Crotons require high humidity, full sun, and moist and rich humus soils.
Some varieties are Banana Croton, Gold Dust Croton, Mammy Croton, and Petra Croton. Banana Croton has about 8 inch long leaves, which form a thick, full plant. Dark green leaves are seen in Gold Dust Croton and are scattered with brilliant yellow dots. Narrow and twisted leaves are seen in Mammy Croton (Fire Croton). Petra Croton has beautiful show-stopper leaves combining waxy colors of the rainbow, with lines as of networks or with light color spots appearances.
