IndiaCrafts of Nicobar
Inhabitants of Nicobar Islands have their own craft traditions and skill. The major crafts of the Nicobarese are wood work, making of cross bows, basketry and mat making. The wood work of the Nicobarese includes carpentry, fencing plantations and making canoes of various types. They make wooden statues and figures of birds and animals to ward off evil spirits. These wooden figures are well crafted and painted with bright colors. There is very little wood carving or sculpting in Car Nicobar. Basketry and mat making are two important traditional crafts of the Nicobarese, carried on by women in their leisure time. Raw materials for making mats are coconut stems and pandanus leaves. These mats are soft light and cool and used for sitting, sleeping and making huts. Making of cross bows is another functional craft of the Nicobarese. Its novel design and trigger system make it a prized handicraft article for tourists. Chowra is known for earthen pots.
