Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), an annual herb is found throughout India, and is used mainly as condiments and as medicine. The upper leaves are narrow, finely cut with linear lobes, while the lower ones are broad with crenately lobed margins. The flowers (white or pinkish purple) are small, located on compound terminal umbels. The fruits, yellowish brown in color, are globular and ribbed.
Fruits contain Linalool and coriandrinonediol. Coriander is added to chutneys and sauces. The fruits are used in curry powder, spices, sausages, and seasonings.
It is known locally as Dhanyaka.
