Common Broom belongs to the family Leguminosae. It is a shrub with erect, green, tough, spineless stems and grows throughout temperate zone. It is found on sunny slopes, heaths and waste ground, usually on acid soils.
The flowers, flowering stems, seeds and roots possess medicinal properties. The shrub contains alkaloid sparteine, glycoside, tannins, essential oils and bitter compounds. A decoction of the young shoots is taken to relieve gravel and dysuria.
