Coleus




Coleus (Coleus barbatus) is an erect profusely branched annual herb with aromatic odor, found in tropical and sub tropical zones. It belongs to the family Lamiaceae. Flowers are seen in racemes. Roots are well developed and have antihypertensive property. Propagation is achieved through seeds and cuttings.

Coleus is adaptable to varying climates, from hot to humid climate. It can be grown on a variety of soil textures ranging from low moisture to red sandy loam. In India, Coleus grows widely in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.

It is also known as Sugandhabala, Garmalu and Makkari beru.
