Coleroon River, a major waterway of the
Tiruchirapalli and
Thanjavur districts, is formed by the bifurcation of the
Cauvery at Srirangam. This northern branch of the Cauvery flows through the Chidambaram taluk for 36 miles and finally joins the Bay of Bengal 6 miles south of Porto-Novo (Parangipettai).
The famous Sri Ranganathasamy temple is situated near the Coleroon.
