Choudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902 at Noorpur in
Meerut District,
Uttar Pradesh. He was the Prime Minister of India during 1979-1980. A post graduate from the Agra University, he was also trained in law. Charan Singh was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly in 1937 from Chhatrauli, and represented the constituency again in 1946, 1952, 1962, and 1967. Later he became the Parliamentary Secretary in Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant's Government in 1946.
A dedicated public worker and staunch believer in social justice, he has authored several books and pamphlets, including Abolition of Zamindari, Co-Operative Farming X-Rayed, India's Poverty and its Solution, Peasant Proprietorship or Land to the Workers, and Prevention of Division of Holdings Below a Certain Minimum.
