Chinai Embroidery

Chinai is a style of embroidery used by the saree weavers of Gujarat. It utilizes the knot stitch. This style was introduced by Chinese embroiders during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Although motifs of Chinese origin were mostly used, the Gujarati weavers incorporated some traditional designs into it. The pattern of elephant, a symbol of wealth in Gujurat, is usually used in the borders of the famous Patola sari, especially for wedding, where it is considered auspicious.
