Cheti Chand

Cheti Chand, the Sindhi New Year, falls on the first day of the Chaitra known as Chet in Sindhi. Cheti Chand is the birthday of Jhulelal, the Patron Saint of Sindhis. This is considered a holy day for them wherein they offer their prayers to Water – the elixir of life. This is also observed as 'Thanksgiving Day'.

A lamp is lit on a bronze plate which contains aksha oil and vermilion. This ritual is called Jyot Jagan. A procession with colorful floats depicting the life of Jhulelal and various aspects of Sindhi culture is taken out to the beaches or the river front. ‘Chhej’ the sindhi folk dance, is performed on this occasion along with other music and drama. New Year's day is considered good for starting new ventures.
