Cheda Sutras is a collection of law books governing the functioning of the Jain religious order. These books contain the rules to be followed by the monks.
The word ‘cheda’ literally means ‘reduction of seniority.’ As the meaning suggests, the rules written in the treatises are meant to cut through the religious authority. The writings are mainly concerned with the disciplinary acts meant for offending monks.
Mahanisheetha Sutra, Panch Kalpa Sutra, Dasha Shruta Skandha Sutra, Vyavahara Sutra, Vrahat Kalpa Sutra and Nisheetha Sutra are texts coming under the Cheda Sutra collection.
