Chandrashala is an ogee, circular or horseshoe-shaped arch seen everywhere in Indian temples and shrines. Its shape is similar to the cross-section of a barrel vault (shala) and used as a pillar supported pediment. If the arch is on the facade of a Chaitya hall it is named Chaitya Arch.
A large chandrashala is seen at the entrance of cave 19 of Ajanta caves.
Varaha Cave at Mahabalipuram in Tamilnadu, Sangameshwara Temple at Mahakuta in Bagalkot District and Ellora Caves in Maharashtra are some of the examples where these types of arches are found.
