Chandraprabha Vahana

An annual event in most temples in South India is the grand nine-day festival of Brahmotsavam. Each day of the festival features a different ‘vahana’ (vehicle) on which the deity is taken for a procession. On the seventh day, during the night, the deity is mounted on the Chandraprabha Vahana, the Moon chariot.

The literal meaning of ‘Chandraprabha’ is ‘Light of the Moon’. According to Hindu mythology, Chandra (moon) is the king of medicine. He is also the commander of the mind, because of his cool and pleasant nature. The deity of the temple is therefore mounted on the Moon chariot to enjoy the soothing experience derived from the ride. The lord, on being content with the ride, will bless the devotees.
