Chandragupta I
Chandragupta I (320-335) was the founder of the Gupta Dynasty. He was the son of Ghatokacha. Chandragupta married Kumaradevi, daughter of the chief of the Lichhavis. It was a turning point in his life. Patliputra was given to him as dowry by the Lichhavis. He laid the foundation of his empire at Patliputra and started conquering many neighboring states with the help of the Lichhavis. His kingdom extended to encompass Allahabad, Magadha (Bihar), Prayaga, and Saketa (easten Uttar Pradesh.) He was succeeded by his son Samudragupta.
