Chandra Pirai, literally means the shape of the moon, is a percussion instrument consisting of an iron rod bent in the form of a crescent across which is stretched by hide. The frame also bears a handle. To the farthest end of the handle a curved band made of iron is also attached. This band is tied round the forehead of the player who strikes the instrument on both sides of the membrane with small sticks.
Chandra Pirai, also known as Chandra mandalam in Telugu, is commonly used in Mariamman temples and in temples of village deities.
