Chandesvara Nayanar was one of the 63
nayanars explained in the
Periya Puranam. Vichara Sarman was his original name. He was a very brilliant student. He learnt Vedas and all the Agamas at the age of five. Vichara Sarman was a greate devotee of
Lord Shiva.
Once Vichara Sarman took the job of cowherd. He wished to perform Abhishekam for Lord Siva. So he construct a temple and image of Shiva Lingam from mud. Vichara Sarman used to offer milk, to bathe the Lingam. On seeing this one villager reported the matter to the owners of the cows. Villager told them that Vichara Sarman was pouring precious milk on mud and river sand. The owners made a complaint to Vichara Sarman's father. But his father didn't ask him anything because he wanted to find out for himself. Without Vichara Sarman's knowledge he followed him, and came to watch Vichara Sarman pouring milk on the improvised Siva Lingam. His father hit him with a stick and knocked the milk-pot down. Vichara Sarman realised that his father committed an unpardonable offence against Lord Siva (Siva Aparadham). He took a stick and hit his father at same time by the will of the Lord, the stick transformed into an axe and killed his father.
One seeing the depth of Vichara Sarman’s devotion Lord Shiva immensely pleased and appeared before him, with Parvati. The Lord put a garland, which was taken from his own neck, around Vichara Sarman's neck and blessed him.
