Chander Narain Singh

Winner of Mahavir Chakra



Chander Narain Singh was a captain in the Indian army at the time of the Indo-Pak war of 1965. Pakistani infiltration was reported on August 5, 1965, in Poonch, close to the headquarters of the Infantry Brigade. Immediately, a patrol commanded by caption Chander Narain Singh was sent to locate contain the infiltration.

The patrol reaching halfway up a hill range, encountered fierce Pakistani gun fire. India lost one man in this initial skirmish. Caption Singh moved towards the enemy's hideout and two enemy light machine guns were silenced.

Caption Singh made his final attack in the cover of darkness. He dared to move on to within 50 meters of the enemy and opened fire. Unfortunately he fell a victim to a burst of sudden machine gun fire. However his men continued the attack and routed the enemy.

Caption Sing was awarded Mahavir Chakra for his valor and heroism posthumously.
