Celery (also called Ajamoda) is an erect annual herb, grown on the foothills of the north-western
Himalayas and the outlying hills of
Punjab,
Himachal Pradesh and
Uttar Pradesh. Some varieties of the herb are biennial. The roots are succulent and well developed. The branches are angular and noticeably jointed. The leaves are oblong to obovate, pinnate or trifoliolate. The fruit (seed) is a schizocarp containing two mericarps. The seeds consist of apain, apigenin and chlorogenic acid. Celery is prescribed as a nervine, sedative and tonic.
