Caracal




Caracal (Felis caracal) is medium-sized cat with long legs and a short tail. Head-body length is 62-82 cm, and tail is 23-32 cm. The animal stands about 45 cm at shoulders. Cheeks are without any pronounced ruff of hair. There is a characteristic dark spot on both sides of the muzzle, and two short vertical bars above the eyes. Ears are fairly close together. Nose pad is dark brown or pink in color. Ears are large and rounded, tip with long erect tuft of hair, back of ears black with a frosting of white hairs. Iris is golden or grayish green. Females are lighter in weight than males. Legs are long and slender, and have no elbow bars. The coat is uniformly reddish sandy color, without any trace of pattern, except some faint spots on the underside of the chest and buffy stripes on the inner side of the fore limbs. The under part is creamy buff. Caracal is found in North-West and Central India.
