Buddhist Bauhinia (Latin name Bauhinia variegata), a medium-sized, deciduous tree, grows up to an altitude of 1,300 m in the
Himalayas. It is characterized by gray bark, sub-coriaceous and deeply cordate leaves, and variously colored flowers. The pods are long, hard, flat, glabrous, dehiscent, and 10 to 15 seeded.
The bark is useful in scrofula and skin diseases. The dried buds are used for diarrhea, dysentery and hemorrhoids.
It is also known as Kachnar and Kaniar.
